Admittedly the above two plants are somewhat different from the normal cactus house plants. But there are a number of spiny cacti which have lovely flowers which last a very long time.

The Barrel cactus is an excellent example of a prickly plant producing wonderful flowers. The blooms are present in a large range, from striking red to a soothing yellow. These flowers grow at the end to the prickles and in fact used by the Native Americans in stews and boiled to make beverages.

One other cactus providing a pleasantly surprising flower is the Beavertail cacti. These plants could be low to the ground, but they might have bigger than expected red and lavender coloured flowers. The flowers will often be approximately 3 inches, so they create a beautiful plant.

So rethink your image of cactus house plants and you'll quickly realise that these aren't little, spiny, unattractive, desert plants.
