Q&A: Can I legally get the records of the actual messages for cell phone text messages?

Question by uchiha_30: Can I legally get the records of the actual messages for cell phone text messages?
I’m looking to get the actual text message conversation records from my cell phone. I thought this was legal, but AT&T said no, I would need a court order, even though it’s my phone! Is there a way to get a copy of the records or do I need to get a court order? Help!

Court order, needed. AT&T has federal privacy issues to deal with.

Yeah. AT&T are douche bags. The person that owns the account has to go get it and legally they HAVE to give it to you. They did the same thing to me and i got them. You dont have to have a court order o_o

well i know alot of my friends parents are able to do it at us cellular so i dont see why not. maybe there jus being lazy. you could go to other carriers and see if they offer that and then go back and argue with at &t otherwise have a good excuse and get a court order. but i do know is possible. my moms threatened me lots of times haha =)

You will have to get a subpoena for ATT to search your records. I will warn you that even with the subpoena, there is a great chance that ATT has deleted them already. Despite what everyone says, phone companies do not save everyone texts. The purge the system frequently. The best chance you have is finding them messages on your cell phone.
