Q&A: How to permanently delete an embarrassing photo off a camera?
Question by 12312: How to permanently delete an embarrassing photo off a camera?
My friends took a really embarrassing photo of me and I want to permanently delete it from the camera. I heard that even if you delete the photo you can still recover or retrieve the deleted photo. I also heard that even if you delete the photo it can still be on the memory card. I deleted the photo manually but i dont see any memory card in the memory card slot so does that mean the photo is gone forever? I also took old photos and backed them up to the pc and deleted the old directory. Please help

Pretty sure you deleted it. If one to were recover the photo, they would really have to get some software to do so… but if you fill up the memory card/ memory on camera with new photos, then it will definitely be gone.

Hi,
If the picture was taken without a card in the camera, it was stored in the camera. Deleting or formatting the internal camera memory should remove the image completely. If it was taken with a card in the camera, it will have been recorded on the card and you have a bigger problem
If its on a card, then you are right. Deleted images can be recovered from a memory card – there are may pieces of software available on the web which will do it – some are even free!
Formatting in the camera only removes file system links on the card, it does not remove the image data, so it is possible to recover it – or at least some of it.
There are 3 options: -
1. If your camera has a “low-level format” option, then use it. If you do not know what I am talking about – your camera does not have this option
2. Format the card on a computer – you will need a card adapter for the computer – and do not select the “quick format” option. This is not the same as connecting the camera to the computer with a USB cord
3. Format the card in the camera, and shoot images until the card is full, use the highest quality setting on the camera and this will take less time to fill the card. This will overwrite any images left on the card and it will not be possible to recover them
Oh yes the fourth option – throw the card and buy a new one. This is the 100% way.

Format the card.
Deleting and formatting DO NOT permanently erase data. With some free software and a bit of knowhow it is possible to recover the data. If you really want to be sure the photo is gone you will need to overwrite the data. Take all the photos you want off the camera, format the card, and then point the camera at a wall and take a video until the memory runs out. That will solve your problem.
